Critical Power Transformer Restoration Prevents Environmental and Operational Disaster

View all projects

Project Details

R.J. Forbes executed a comprehensive 9-phase restoration process including site safety inspection and lock-out tag-out procedures, scaffolding installation with debris containment, high-pressure surface preparation at 5,000 psi with proper waste collection, SP2 and SP3 hand and power tool surface cleaning, followed by a complete three-coat protective system application (primer, intermediate, and topcoat), thorough coating inspection with client reporting, and complete site demobilization.

Project Challenge

During a routine audit, this power generation transformer was identified as having significant corrosion issues that threatened the integrity of the substrate over time. Without intervention, the transformer faced an imminent risk of coolant oil leakage, which would result in a complete loss of power generation operations and create a potential environmental hazard. The client needed immediate action to prevent both operational shutdown and environmental contamination.

Project Solution

R.J. Forbes implemented a comprehensive surface preparation and protective coating restoration system to mitigate corrosion threats and extend the transformer’s operational lifespan. The team utilized high-pressure washing at 5,000 psi combined with precision hand and power tool cleaning to achieve SP2 and SP3 surface preparation standards. A sophisticated three-layer coating system was then applied, including primer, intermediate coat, and protective topcoat, all executed within comprehensive safety protocols and debris containment measures to ensure environmental protection throughout the process.
