Project Details
R.J. Forbes completed a comprehensive power transformer restoration project for DeltaStar, involving the complete removal of compromised existing coatings and application of a high-performance epoxy and urethane coating system. The project required strict adherence to electrical safety protocols, including lock-out tag-out procedures, contained work zone isolation to capture and collect all debris, and specialized surface preparation techniques. The coating system utilized Sherwin-Williams’ Macro Epoxy 646 fast-cure primer, followed by a high-solids polyurethane topcoat to provide maximum protection against environmental elements and extend the transformer’s operational lifespan.
Project Challenge
The client’s power transformer had developed compromised coating integrity that threatened the equipment’s protection against environmental elements and potential electrical hazards. The existing coating system had deteriorated to the point where proper surface preparation was required to ensure optimal adhesion of new protective coatings. The project required working around energized electrical equipment, adhering to strict safety protocols, and ensuring complete containment of all abrasive blasting debris. Additionally, specialized high-performance coating systems were applied to withstand the demanding operational environment of power generation and transmission equipment.
Project Solution
R.J. Forbes implemented a comprehensive 7-step restoration process, beginning with thorough site safety inspections and work plan reviews, followed by the implementation of lock-out/tag-out procedures for electrical safety. The team installed a complete work zone isolation containment system to ensure the capture and collection of all debris during the abrasive blasting process. After achieving proper surface preparation through abrasive blasting, the team applied Sherwin-Williams’ Macro Epoxy 646 fast-cure primer system, followed by the application of a high-solids polyurethane topcoat. The project concluded with a post-coating application inspection and the delivery of a comprehensive client inspection report, followed by demobilization.
