Project Challenge
The Mystic Aquarium required specialized restoration of two critical habitats – the Sea Lion Pool #2 and the Penguin Exhibit Pool. Both concrete structures had deteriorated from constant exposure to water and marine elements, threatening habitat safety and visual appearance for these beloved attractions.
The restoration needed to be:
- Safe for marine life: Using materials compatible with sensitive aquatic environments
- Highly durable: Standing up to constant water exposure and chemical treatment
- Visually appealing: Enhancing visitor experience through clean, professional finishes
- Efficiently executed: Minimizing exhibit downtime to maintain visitor attendance
Project Solution
RJ Forbes developed and executed a comprehensive restoration plan:
Sea Lion Exhibit (Pool #2):
- Performed meticulous SP-13 surface preparation across approximately 5,650 square feet
- Applied specialized marine-grade coating system:
- 1 parge coat of Tnemec N218 to create uniform surface
- 1 finish coat of Tnemec 22 for durability and appearance
- Treated all critical zones: pool floor, walls, concrete columns, exposed areas under platforms, and overhang areas
- Implemented full containment systems to protect surrounding environment
Penguin Exhibit Pool:
- Conducted thorough SP-13 surface preparation
- Addressed structural issues through strategic patching with Tnemec N218
- Applied enhanced protection with 2 coats of Tnemec 22
- Maintained strict containment protocols throughout the process
Through expert application techniques and premium marine-grade materials, RJ Forbes delivered a restoration that ensures long-term habitat integrity while creating a visually stunning environment for both animals and visitors.
