Project Challenge
After 25 years of harsh New England weather, the iconic Gillette Stadium steel structures had faded.
The original epoxy and urethane coating system — once vibrant Gillette Blue — had reached the end of its lifecycle, worn down by salt treatments, extreme temperatures, and constant UV exposure.
Maintaining operations during a busy event calendar added another layer of complexity. The south ramp, a major thoroughfare, needed critical maintenance — but without interrupting daily stadium traffic and guest experiences.
On top of that, environmental factors like temperature, humidity, and dewpoint had to be strictly controlled to ensure coating performance.
Project Solution
RJ Forbes partnered with The Kraft Group to design a tailored plan focused on quality, speed, and minimal disruption:
- Developed a phased work schedule aligned with stadium events and traffic flows.
- Performed surface preparation using a mix of pressure washing, abrasive blasting, and detailed cleaning to eliminate salt buildup, rust, and deteriorated coatings.
- Scheduled off-hour/night shift work to reduce impact on stadium activities.
- Isolated work zones safely to maintain smooth public access.
- Monitored and documented weather and surface conditions daily to ensure coatings were applied under optimal conditions.
- Deployed a dedicated, expert crew committed to delivering flawless results.
Thanks to proactive planning and expert craftsmanship, RJ Forbes restored the south ramp’s structural steel, reviving Gillette Stadium’s iconic blue — and preserving the legendary fan experience for years to come.
